A lighter and healthier Avocado Green Goddess Dressing that’s ready in under five minutes! Fresh and creamy, it’s a great way to use up the herbs in your fridge.

Avocado Green Goddess Dressing

It’s creamy. It’s herbaceous. It’s tangy. It’s green. It’s a delicious homemade dressing that you could eat with a spoon straight from the jar! You know, if you were so inclined, no one here is judging.

This Avocado Green Goddess Dressing is one of the easiest dressing’s you’ll ever make, and it delivers on fresh flavour while using only a handful of ingredients. It’s versatile too; it can be used as a salad dressing, a dip or a sauce. It’s what you need to brighten up any roast veg!

Why you’ll Love this Avocado Green Goddess Dressing Recipe

  • Light and fresh. Subbing out the mayo and sour cream for Greek yogurt and avocado, this version of green goddess dressing is just as satisfying without feeling heavy or too creamy. It pairs better with salads and other dishes without overpowering them.
  • Use it up. You can use any herb combo you like, so it’s a great recipe for using up the ends of herbs leftover in your fridge. The original herb mix was tarragon, chervil and chives, but my go to mix is basil, mint and dill – mostly because they’re the soft herbs I have most often in my fridge. Other soft herbs like parsley and marjoram would all work well in this Avocado Green Goddess Dressing too. Just steer clear of rosemary and sage for this particular recipe as they don’t blend up quite as nicely as the softer herbs.
  • Versatile. This avocado green goddess can be a dressing for salads, a dip for veggies and wedges, or a sauce for burgers or grain bowls.
  • Quick and easy. Literally takes just five minutes to make – put all the ingredients into a blender and whizz them up. That’s it!

What is Green Goddess Dressing?

Long before the tiktok trend, the original green goddess dressing was a mayonnaise-based salad dressing created by Chef Philip Roemer at San Franciso’s Palace Hotel. It’s said he created it in honour of actor George Arliss, a hotel guest during the filming of the 1920s ‘The Green Goddess’.

Recipes evolve over time, including the Palace Hotel’s own green goddess dressing, and there are many, many variations on a green goddess dressing. I’ve swapped the traditional mayonnaise and sour cream for Greek yogurt and avocado to keep it rich and creamy without it being overpowering. I mix in the herbs that I like, as opposed to the original tarragon, and I use lemon in place of vinegar to make the dressing zippy and tangy.

Avocado Green Goddess Dressing Recipe Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this delightfully creamy and tangy recipe:

  • Greek yogurt. A Greek yogurt base give this dressing the creaminess it needs without the heaviness. It makes it healthier as well, and doesn’t compromise on the taste.
  • Avocado. Not all Greek yogurts are created equal, so to give the dressing some body, and fresh flavour, I add avocado. Without it, the dressing would be much thinner and a lot less green.
  • Fresh herbs. Soft herbs are what you’re after for this Avocado Green Goddess Dressing. My go to mix is basil, mint and dill, but chives, chervil, tarragon, parsley and marjoram will all work.
  • Lemon. Many recipes will use vinegar, or the original tarragon vinegar, but I find fresh lemon juice adds a better flavour and a brightness to the dressing that better balances the creaminess. If you don’t have fresh lemons, sub it for apple cider or white wine vinegar (in that order).
  • Salt and pepper. Season to your own taste, though a little extra pepper in this dressing is recommended. Or go the original route and throw in an anchovy for some saltiness.

How to Make this Avocado Green Goddess Dressing Recipe

The only prep work in this recipe is picking the herbs off the stem. That’s it! Here’s the quick rundown on how to make the recipe:

  • Blend. Put all the ingredients into a food processor and blend until everything is combined and smooth.
  • Taste. Check the dressing for seasoning and adjust if necessary.
  • Serve. If you’re serving the Avocado Green Goddess Dressing as a dressing or sauce, leave it at room temperature. If you’d like to serve it as a dip, place it in the fridge for around 45 minutes so it can firm up. Stir well and then serve.

You can serve this Avocado Green Goddess Dressing on a salad or slaw, as a dip for crudités or roast veggies, or as a sauce for grain bowls, burgers and sandwiches or salmon. A potato salad smothered in this dressing would also be a hit!

Notes

Storage. Any leftover Avocado Green Goddess Dressing can be stored for 2-3 days in the fridge. Place leftover dressing in a container, place some cling film over the exposed surface and press down to remove the air. Cover with a tight fitting lid and store in the fridge. Note that the colour will dull over time, but still retain in greenness and taste.
Greek yogurt. I use Farmers Union Greek Style All Natural Yogurt because of its thickness and flavour. Make sure to use a thick Greek yogurt.
