Learn all about bananas, where it came from, what it pairs well with, and how to use it in cooking today.
‘Bananas are great, as I believe them to be the only known cure for existential dread.’
– author Anne Lamott
Bananas are an elongated, (usually) yellow, tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia.
Botanically a berry, they are one of the most popular fruits worldwide, with Uganda being the largest consumer of bananas at almost 1 kg per person, per day!
Bananas grow in clusters of 50-150, with individual bananas grouped in bunches known as ‘hands’ of 10-20 at a time. A single banana is called a ‘finger’. Might want to forget that fact before you bite into your next banana!

Quick Ideas Using Bananas:
- Sauté banana slices until caramalised and use to top breakfast staples like pancakes, waffles and even toast.
- Freeze and blend bananas to make ‘nice cream’. Milk of your choice or coconut water can be added for a more creamy ice cream. Chocolate, berries and peanut butter are great mix-ins.
- Make a quick and easy banana snack for an afternoon pick-me-up: spread a tortilla with peanut butter or chocolate spread, add a whole banana and some cinnamon, wrap it up into a log, and cut into thick rounds to enjoy.
- Started baking to find you’ve run out of eggs? A small, mashed up banana can be used as an egg replacement for a lot of sweet treats.
- Make banana muesli by combining mashed banana and oats with a little honey, and baking until toasty and golden.
